This is the top wine from La Rioja Alta and is only ever made in the very best vintages, this can be only a few times per decade with 2005 being the currnet release. Gran Reserva 890 is named, rather confusingly, after the date of the creation of La Rioja Alta (1890). The company is renowned for the quality of its Reservas and in particular for its Gran Reservas, the 904 and the 890. The latter are produced only in exceptional years, are amongst the finest wines being produced in Rioja today.
This is a wine that slumbers patiently for 6 years in oak, then is allowed to rest in bottle for a few more years before its released to the suspecting market-place. It is a blend of Tempranillo from the towns of Briñas, Labastida, Rodezno. These are complemented in the blend by 2% Mazuelo and 3% Graciano, they are all fermented with indiganous yeast to the point of dry with a quick melolactic fermentation. The wine was then aged in both new and second fill American oak.
Taste: An intense nose full of spicy notes, vanilla, chocolate over dried fruit. In the mouth it is perfectly balanced with sweet fruit and a hint of liquorice. The finish is long.
